5 Important things Everyone Gets Wrong About Sunscreen

Don’t we all love the sun? How it feels on our skin and the way it gives us a newlook without even trying? Nothing really compares to that beautiful tan we get – for free. But, just like everything in life, all good things come with a price.

Sadly, the price we pay for this is a bit expensive, and it’s skin cancer! Did you know that half of Americans at the age of 65 mostly develop some form of skin cancer?

If you are a sun lover, then it’s smart to get a skin test, but it’s smarter to invest in sunscreens when you are younger, learn everything about them, and always keep one in your purse. Today, I will check off all the mistakes people believe about sunscreens that may cause major issues, so let’s dive right into it:

1- You don’t wear enough sunscreen!

not enough sunscreen

The more, the merrier. So whoever told you that a shot glass of sunscreen is enough was wrong! According to studies, people apply only 25% of the necessary amount of sunscreen to reach the SPF mentioned on the label. Not applying enough means not getting enough protection and increasing you risk of sunburn, skin cancer, and premature aging skin. In other words, all of our nightmares!

So apply and re-apply liberally and often to get the maximum benefits!

2- You check the SPF only!

SPF sunscreens

Don’t we all do it? Checking the number on the box and call it a day? Well, that’s a mistake and I am guilty of it.

You need to also be looking for the phrase “broad-spectrum”; otherwise, your skin will be exposed to the UVA and UVB rays. The good news is the majority of sunscreens in the market now are broad-spectrum.

Anyway, make sure you give your skin the protection it deserves, and if you need
recommendation, this is what I recommend: Neutrogena Ultra Sheer

3- You believe darker skin is immune from sun damage!

Seriously, do you?

It’s kind of true that darker skin has extra melanin that makes your chances of sunburns less than those with fair skin, but it still won’t be protected from the UVA rays. This is why, regardless of your skin color, you need to apply sunscreen regularly because you are all equally vulnerable to sun damage! #allskinsmatter

4- You don’t apply sunscreen until it’s too late!

If you want to protect your skin, then you should be fully committed, and that means applying your sunscreen at least 30 minutes before being exposed to the sun. The active ingredients take that long to be absorbed and activated.

Many people wait till they are by the poolside or at the beach to apply the sunscreen, which is wrong! Apply it when you are still in the car, or at home even. Unless, you want to wait 30 minutes after application to be exposed to the sun every time!

5- You don’t regularly re-apply!

Oh, dear! Aren’t we all? It’s not easy to remember re-applying sunscreen often, but if we really need those dangerous UV rays to be completely blocked, then re-applying becomes a necessity, regardless of the type of sunscreen you use!

Most dermatologists recommend wearing it again every 30 minutes, but you should read the label because each brand is different. By the way, did you know that UV rays can penetrate the glass and put your skin at danger still? Yeah, wear your sunscreen if you drive constantly or work by a window, and re-apply it!

6- Best sunscreen for your skin type
